What Kind Of Solar Panel Kit Would I Need To Power My Garage?

I only need enough power for an outdoor spotlight, interior light & sprinkler computer. And the occasional power tool.

  1. You need to plan exactly what equipment you intend to use. I suggest that you use a LED outdoor spotlight and low energy flourescent lamps inside the garage. You will need a battery pack of deep discharge lead acid batteries and an inverter to produce AC power. The size of the batteries and the inverter will depend on the electrical load, especially the electrical demand of the power tool. You then work back to the size of the PV panel that will charge the batteries. When you know the size of the panel(s) you can select the charge controller that fits between the PV panel and the battery pack.

  2. power4home.com has a d.i.y. information kit to build your own for less than 100 bucks.the kit costs about 40.

  3. The lights and sprinkler panel might be do-able, but the
“occasional power tool’ would require more storage and
inverter capacity than you’d want to pay for.
(To be useful you’d need charging and storage capacity to ‘ride through’ a rainy day or two.)

  4. Why not wire it up. Its cheaper!
Maybe wind and solar with some storage batteries for that load for the power tools and cloudy days.
